Help on these box and whisker graphs!

@ganeshie8

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

range = maximum - minimum

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ganeshie8 The 1st question would be 6?

OpenStudy (scorcher219396):

So when making a box and whisker, the highest point is plotted as one end of the line, the lowest point is plotted as the other end. (Outliers are marked as dots beyond the line) The median or Q2 is the middle line in the box, then Q1 is the median of the lower half of data, and is the lower line of the box. The Q3 is the median of the upper half of the data, and is the top line of the box. The area within the box is always 50% of the data by nature of how you solved for the box, and each line of the box divides off another 25% So, for the first question, the range would be the highest-lowest, or the top of the line-the bottom of the line, which is 13-4=11 For the second question, the only part above 90 is from the upper line of the box up, which is 25%, so people under would be 75%

OpenStudy (scorcher219396):

The line represents all of your data (minus outliers) whereas the box indicates where the mass or majority of the data is

But for the 1st question wouldn't the range be 6? 12-6= 6?

OpenStudy (scorcher219396):

No, the range goes from the ends of the line, not from the ends of the box 13-4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ganeshie8 Thank you very much for that picture! @scorcher219396 I completely understand now. Thank you very much too!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

12-6=6 is called InterQuartileRange, but the question is about full range...
