Solve the system of equations by substitution. What is the solution for x?
2x + y = 1
4x + 2y = -1
OpenStudy (anonymous):
heyy its me again
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Is this algebra?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i see other people typing, do you still want my help?

OpenStudy (ibbutibbu.):
ok so i would make the first equation something like y = mx + b. that would be y = -2x + 1. then substitute. 4x + 2(-2x + 1) = -1. then substitute. can you do the rest?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
It's okay Samantha
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Thanks though
OpenStudy (ibbutibbu.):
do you know how to simplify the rest?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
okay! tag me when you need help! :)

Hang on Ibb, I am reading your last reply
OpenStudy (ibbutibbu.):
ok then
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Do you add the -2x to the 4x?
OpenStudy (ibbutibbu.):
yess
OpenStudy (ibbutibbu.):
add the like terms

So than you subtract the 2 to the -1 to get 6x=-3?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
@Ibbutibbu. ?
OpenStudy (ibbutibbu.):
you distributed wrong, @ImaGuest . try again
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Oh, forgot about the 1 in the parenthesis. 6x=-2?
OpenStudy (ibbutibbu.):
no. you need to distribute this= 2(-2x + 1). what is the answer to that?

Oh, do you multiply the 2 to everything in the parenthesis?
OpenStudy (ibbutibbu.):
yes good job!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
So, -4x+2?
OpenStudy (ibbutibbu.):
yes Great Work!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Is that it?

OpenStudy (ibbutibbu.):
no. then you do this= 4x -4x + 2 = -1
OpenStudy (anonymous):
x=-3?
OpenStudy (ibbutibbu.):
no the answer is no solution. you subtract like terms. so what is 4x - 4x?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Oh, wait, no
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Yeah I just realized my mistake

Yeah, my bad XD
OpenStudy (ibbutibbu.):
ok lol so what is 4x - 4x?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
0?
OpenStudy (ibbutibbu.):
mood. so what is 0 - 2 = 1?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
-2=1?

OpenStudy (ibbutibbu.):
so that is...
OpenStudy (anonymous):
No, wait
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Oh, thought that wasn't right
OpenStudy (anonymous):
So the answer would have to be no solution since there is no x-value
OpenStudy (anonymous):
@Ibbutibbu. Is that correct? The answer choices are: A.) x = 0 B.) x = 2 C.) There is no x value as there is no solution. D.) x can be any value, as there is an infinite number of solutions.

the answer is C
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Okay, so I was correct. Thank you for your time and help!
