I would say short phrases that make the reader interested, because that makes the reader feel like something important will happen of the language is right. It also makes the reader feel like this part is faster-paced.
I don't think it's B because shorter phrases don't necessarily mean that suspense is being built. A doesn't seem right either being suspense in a story shouldn't make you confused. I think D would make the most sense because pausing can be used to build suspense. kind of like when you're watching an intense show and right at the suspenseful part, it goes to commercial
