1/2 * 12 = 6  OR  0.5 * 12 = 6 

This is my guess.

1/2 times 12 just means 1/2 of 12, so the answer is 6.

Well, I already solved the expression. I don't know how I can make an explanation, but I know the reason why the answer is positive is because half of 12 is 6, which is positive. If you are relating it with the situation, it is positive because you are still above sea level.
