A sample set is just a subset of the population. Since you didn't post your example, I will just provide a sample one.

An example:
You want to know the average IQ of people in France. There are millions of people in France so this is hard to determine for every single individual (imagine administering an IQ test to all the people in France!). Instead, you take a representative sample (a subset of people), of say a few thousand French people, who will do the test. These few thousand people are your sample set, and from this sample, you can infer what the IQ level is for he entire population of France.
