My girlfriend asked me this question: Suppose I were to smooch you..the distance between our lips would be zero( or close to zero perhaps). According to Newton's gravitational formula, the force of gravity is inversly proportional to the distance between objects..so if the distane be close to zero, the force would tend to infinity..in other words we would never be able to break our liplock..:P...what do u guys say? Whats wrong?..( I did answer her though and got rewarded :P)
Thank God Electromagnetism exists!
what has electromagnetism got to do with it?
(1)Gravitational force is a very weak force. It also depends upon the mass of the object. (2)The distance considered is between the center of the two objects. For example if two similar spheres are in contact we don't take the distance as zero but as 2r
A little more elaboration would make your answer perfect @Abhisar
oh, nice question! i like it but to understand why you can break your liplock we have to answer why the distance below lips isn't zero? m? Even if we would press your heads together, the distance wouldn'y be zero, because there are a lot of irregularities on your lips... if you will see on your lips over microscope you will see something like this: |dw:1407748975968:dw| thus, only tiny contact area is in the small distance. But may be that distance zero and the force still infinity? No! In that conatct area highly visible another force - electromagnetism that repels your lips. In this way, only tiny contact area of your lips contacts and not with the zero distance! P.S. you also didn't stick to the wall if you will put your hand on the wall...
