The ratio of swimmers to runners in a biathlon is 5:2. There are 60 swimmers. How many runners are there? a)5 b)24 c)25 d)60

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

5/2*60/x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5 times 12 = 60. So you multiply the other side by 12 also. 2 times 12 is 24 so B is your answer

For every 5 swimmers, there is 2 runners. Let's see how many "groups" of 5 swimmers there is by dividing 60 by 5. We get 12 so there is 12 "groups" of swimmers and thus 12 "groups" of runners too. There are 2 in each group of runners, so 2 times 12 will give our total runners. Looks like the answer is 24 runners
