OpenStudy (texaschic101):

2x - 3y = 6 (turn to y = mx + b form to find slope(m) -3y = -2x + 6 y = 2/3x - 2 slope here is 2/3 perpendicular line has negative reciprocal slope...all that means is flip the slope and change the sign. So our slope we need is -3/2 (see how I flipped the slope and changed the sign. now we use y = mx + b, and since we know slope(m), we need to find b(the y intercept) y = mx + b slope(m) = -3/2 (-2,-3)...x = -2 and y = -3 now we sub -3 = -3/2(-2) + b -3 = 3 + b -3 - 3 = b -6 = b so your perpendicular equation is : y = -3/2x - 6 any questions ?

omg i get it i thought it would be harder thanks so much!! :D can u help me with 2 more different questions plz? :) i dont get them :(

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

I can try

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

as long as it is not geometry...I am not real good with that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay :) ok hold on :)

perpendicular lines will have negative reciprocal slopes. And remember, that in y = mx + b form, the slopes is in the m position. So we have to compare the slopes. Negative reciprocal slopes are like : -2/3 ans 3/2....or 1/7 and -7/1....or 4/5 and -5/4. so your perpendicular lines are : y = 5x + 8 ---- slope here is 5 or 5/1 y = -1/5x + 3 --- slope here is -1/5 so these slopes, 5/1 and -1/5 are negative reciprocals, thus, perpendicular

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

do you understand ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its the 3rd one ? :)

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok can u help me with 1 more ?:)

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

ask away

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this one :)

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

y = 2x - 1 slope here is 2 or 2/1 we need to find negative reciprocal slope...so we flip the slope and change the sign our new slope is -1/2 y = mx + b slope(m) = -1/2 (-2,-2)...x = -2 and y = -2 now sub -2 = -1/2(-2) + b -2 = 1 + b -2 - 1 = b -3 = b perpendicular equation is : y = -1/2x - 3 (C)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omfg thanks i get it now :) <3

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

just remember that perpendicular lines will have negative reciprocal slopes, but parallel lines will have the same slope. Just remember that for the near future.
