In the poem it talks about a road diverging into yellow wood. This is referring to the color of the tree and its leaves. The only time of year that leaves are yellow are in the fall. Another reason why it is considered to be in fall is because the line "In leaves no step had trodden black." telling us that there were leaves on the ground.
