1. Political. The Republican party was specifically formed to keep slavery out of the West, and then to abolish slavery entirely. This directly violated Southern life, which was a slave based economy. 
2. This change depends on the time period. Before the Civil War, I must say it was still political. I would research events such as the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the Caning of Charles Sumner, and the 1860 election.
