It depends on the context within which the sound is heard. In the 1950s, a number of composers started composing pieces for tape using recordings of everyday sounds. This was known as Musique Concrete. For example, there is a piece by the composer, Iannis Xenakis called "Concret PH" that is made up of the sounds of burning pieces of charcoal.
