are england and britain the same place?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Great Britain is the name of the island England is a part of. Wales and Scotland also share this island. England is a part of the United Kingdom, which encompasses England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Someone who is said to be "British" comes from the U.K. Someone who is said to be "English" specifically comes from England, not Scotland or Wales. So England is a part of Britain both in a political and geographic sense. It's confusing because many Americans will refer to "the English" when they really mean "the British".
