I'd go with spores. Sporangia are specialized reproductive structures which release spores. These spores then form (through mitosis) the gametophyte stage of the fern. Gametophyte, as its name implies, produces your gametangia which produce gametes. The fusion of the gametes and resulting growth produces the sporophyte stage. Sporangia are produced by the sporophyte to distribute spores.
