mad algebra skills, thats all this is

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if f and g are inverses, then f(g) = g(f) = x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand how to do it, but the algebra is confusing! Exactly, something I don't have

OpenStudy (amistre64):

can you type f and g on here so i dont have to get a migraine flipping between windows?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(x) = (x-8)/(x-7) and g(x) = (-7x-8)/(x-1)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

god, now f(g) = (g-8)/(g-7) replace g with its value (-7x-8)/(x-1)-8 ---------------- (-7x-8)/(x-1)-7 i would suggest multiplying by (x-1)/(x-1) to help clear things up

OpenStudy (amistre64):

*good lol

OpenStudy (amistre64):

another thought, good or bad, is to add/subtract 1 from the top (-7x-8)/(x-1)-8+1-1 -------------------- (-7x-8)/(x-1)-7 (-7x-8)/(x-1)-7 -1 -------------------- (-7x-8)/(x-1)-7 1 1 - ------------------ (-7x-8)/(x-1)-7 then multiply off the x-1 x-1 1 - ------------------ -7x-8 -7(x-1)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

a few ways to approach it, but its al just algebra

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did it the first way and got -15x/(-14x-1)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

(-7x-8)/(x-1)-8 ---------------- (-7x-8)/(x-1)-7 -7x-8 -8(x-1) ---------------- -7x-8 -7(x-1) -7x-8 -8x+8 ------------ -7x-8 -7x+7 -15x ------ -14x-1 do tey have to be inverses? or are we testing to see if they are or not?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It says confirm, so I'm assuming they have to be.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

f(x) = (x-8)/(x-7) and g(x) = (-7x-8)/(x-1) ^^^^ should be +7 from the link x = (y-8)/(y+7) x(y+7) = (y-8) xy+7x = y-8 7x+8 = y-xy 7x+8 = y(1-x) 7x+8 -7x-8 ------- = y = ------- the inverse checks out 1-x x-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Cool, thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 more question, if that's not a problem

OpenStudy (amistre64):

(-7x-8)/(x-1)-8 ---------------- (-7x-8)/(x-1)+7 -7x-8 -8(x-1) ---------------- -7x-8 +7(x-1) -7x-8 -8x+8 ------------ -7x-8 +7x-7 -15x ------ = x -15

OpenStudy (amistre64):

working g(f) should produce x as well
