Medal Alert !!!!! The graph below plots a function f(x): If x represent time, the average rate of change of the function f(x) in the first three seconds is ___.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@amistre64

OpenStudy (amistre64):

what is the slope of the line between t=0, and t=3? now that i look at the graph, the slope is the same thruout ... so what is the slope of the line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/2 ?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

im gona have to ask how you determined that ... as i see it, f(x) moves from 100 to 140 as x moves from 0 to 1 so the rate of change to me is 40 per second

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because i was finding the slope thats how i got 1/2 .. so your saying the answer is 40 ?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

still wondering how you find a slope that gets you 1/2 :) if anything: f(0) - f(3) -------- 0 - 3 100 - 220 --------- -3 120/3 = 40

OpenStudy (amistre64):

since the slope of a line tells us the rate of change of f(x) with respect to x, as x changes by 1, f(x) changes by 40. the slope of the line is 40.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhh ok :) thx may you help me w/ 2 more please ??

OpenStudy (amistre64):

maybe .... just maybe

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol ok Choose the equation below that represents the line passing through the point (-3, -1) with a slope of 4. y - 1 = 4(x - 3) y + 1 = 4(x + 3) y - 3 = 4(x + 1) y + 3 = 4(x - 1)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

any ideas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im thinking that it is b or a

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its is one of those, keep in mind that the point has to fit, so which one makes a true statement for the point (-3,-1) -1 - 1 = 4(-3 - 3) or -1 + 1 = 4(-3 + 3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it A ?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

-1 - 1 = 4(-3 - 3), does this ring true?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh no im sorry its b

OpenStudy (amistre64):

b works fine, you were trying to recall a pattern for the point slope form of a line :) given a point (a,b) and a slope m, the form takes on: y-b = m(x-a)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yayy thanks but this is one more Choose the equation of the line passing through the point (-1, 3) and perpendicular to y = -1/3x + 7. y = 3x - 12 y = 3x + 6 y = 3x - 6 y = 3x

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its best to just plug in the point since that all have the same slope defined for them

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the x=-1, y=3 ..... which one fits?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do it haves to equal to ?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

it has to equal ... the point tells us that x=-1, and y=3 sub in those values for x and y and see what option is true

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh ok hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it C

OpenStudy (amistre64):

lets chk y = 3x - 6 3 = 3(-1) - 6 3 = -9 im gonna say thats not it, close tho

OpenStudy (anonymous):

aww ok hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so does that make it b

OpenStudy (amistre64):

y = 3x + 6, yes 3 = 3(-1) + 6 3 = 3 is good

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yayyy thanks so much but can you help w/ just 2 more and i promise that will be it

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i have to be moving on, ask them in a new question and your bound to get replies

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks
