Why did the British feel it necessary to impose new taxes on the American colonists

To pay off their debts. The British just finished the Seven Year War with France that pushed the French from North America, but the victory was bittersweet because of how much they spent. So they wanted to tax the colonies because taxes at home in Britain were already pretty high and make them pay for the soldiers staying there.
