Miller has a painting that is 4 ft by 8 ft. What will the dimensions of the painting be if he scales it down by a factor of one-fourth  ?

His painting is 4 ft by 8 ft. Let's find the area.
4*8 = area. 32 = area
Divide the area by 4, because he wants to scale it down one-forth.
32/4 = 8
Our new area is 8 ft. We have to have the one length be half of the other length though, because one side was 4 and one was 8 in the original painting.
The factors of 8 are
1, 8
and
2, 4

It looks like this will have to be 2 ft by 4 ft, because one length is half of the other.
Does that make sense? There might be an easier way to do this, but I usually take the long route. :P

actually @NinjaDevo the answer is 1 by 2 cause all you do is 4 divided 4 = 1
and 8 divided by 4 = 2 so that means the answer is 1 by 2 sorry so late
