when you are coming up with a story, or already have the idea, how do you come up with names for characters?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, it depends on the character's personality. If its a boy who is sweet, you might want to choose a masculine but soft name. For example maybe Sky, or Micah, or even Micheal. But if one of your characters are a male and are very ruff and masculine then a name like Benjamin, or something very manly would be good. Its the same with females. if the female is shy or quiet, then something like Sarah, Ira, or May. But if she is strong and independent then a great example would be something like Liona, Skyler, or just stuff but feminine names.

my character is an independent female but has a few insecurities. she takes part in self harm and is trying to stop but keeps being bullied at her school.....any ideas. i need full name

It really depends on the genre of the story, and the kind of names that you personally like. For myself, I enjoy unique and strange names, and I stick mostly to the fantasy genres. So the names I come up with wouldn't often fit in easily in a more realistic, modern story. You can go to baby name websites, and there are also lots of name generators that you can find through Google. Tarryn might work for you, but that's all I could come up with right off the top of my head as I don't really stick to the more normal names.

Independent, but insecure. Okay, I could help with this one. For the first name choose a name with with straight forward sounds in it, but that's known to be pretty. Example: Catrina, Robin, Cate, or Ruth. Now, for the last name, make it something not so unique, because I always seem to feel that in a story an unspecial last name seems to fit characters like these. Something like Webster, Lapaul, or Riller.

One other thing that might help you is if i share some of the characters in a story that I've been writing. Listen to their descriptions and their names. The main character is Kirtsen Webster. She is big hearted, loves to help other, and she's smart, but she's also very tuff, and has a mind of her own. My second main character is named Nick Colton. He is prideful, tuff, impatient, but understanding. Do you see how their names go along them as a person? I hope this helps you!
