what about this question guys I want to know how you did it Simplify the following expression: 5x + 6 - x + 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok what could you simplify? I will guide you through

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I mean what do you know you can simplify here

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not sure i just started and I'm just trying to understand the process

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay in addition and subtraction it doesn't matter what order you do them in. So i could say do this: 18 + 6 - 7 and turn that into 6 + 18 - 7 or even 24 - 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now do you think you can simplify something here?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I seriously don't understand what you mean

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jenise

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let me explain. DO you understand how 13 + 4 - 5 would be the same answer as 17 - 5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jenise Do you understand how?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I cant help if you don't answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry I had to go do something and yes I understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why didnt you understand before?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just had to think about it more

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok then since you understand what can you simplify in that equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What part do you think you can simplify tell me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maybe add the 5 and 6? I'm not that sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jenise Get back here thats not right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can only do it with addition and subtraction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jenise Come back

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can only do that with addition and subtraction so what would you simplify the way i told you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can do it with multiplication but only if both numbers are being multiplied by say x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And quick question does my name say human calculator next to it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

will we be able to put the 12 and 6 together

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YES!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YOU DID IT YOU SIMPLIFIED IT YAY!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

AND ITS SAYING HUMAN CALCULATOR NOW YAY

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um ok then

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry im just happy i helped someone : )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jenise Could i maybe get a medal? Sorry for begging but i like shiny things

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did I give you a medal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry typed that in wrong question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh
