We know that they did because the history of Ancient Greece and Rome were told through the stories of Mount Olympus and the Greek Gods and MYTHOLOGICAL creatures such as mermaids. So B is plausible, let's look at the last two.

For D: Is modern history transmitted orally? Well let's think back to the Bantu tribes of Africa, their history is mixed up and it is difficult to tell myth from truth because they transmitted their history orally from generation to generation: this caused confusion.
