I am new to the course. The mathlet application does not work. I've tried Firefox, Safari, and Chrome. I think it is because I am using Java v8, and the mathlet was created with a previous version of Java. Does anyone know how to get the Mathlet app working and what version of Java they were using to do so?

I figured out the answer to my own question. The problem is a result of the Java security settings. You can change the security settings on your browser. This link: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-allow-java-trusted-sites led me to the right place (though it's not a one-stop site for a full explanation of what to do, you can get the full explanation by clicking on links from this page).

Yes, I had the same problem in Chrome. As you said, it was a matter of adding OCW to my trusted sites. 

(It took Norton 2.5 hours and they couldn't fix it, but I fixed it finally, while Norton was off. Norton had gone too crazy blocking everything, then couldn't even point me to settings. They need better "technicians". I'm thinking of switching to Microsoft Security Essentials.)
