When Fritz drives to work his trip takes 36 minutes, but when he takes the train it takes 20 minutes. Find the distance Fritz travels to work if the train travels an average of 48 miles per hour faster than his driving.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can put his rate in the car as \(x\) then since distance is rate times time you hav e \[36x=D\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

his rate on the train is \(x+48\) so you also have \[20(x+48)=D\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

since the distance is the same coming and going, that means \[36x=20(x+48)\] solve for \(x\) then find \(D\)
