A group of 19 students want to see the show at the planetarium. Tickets cost $11 for each student who is a member of the planetaruim's frequent visitor program and $13 for each student who is not a member. The total cost of the student's tickets is $209. How many students in the group are members of the frequent visitor program? How many are not members? Explain how you know. @Squirrels @prowrestler @dan815

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Please help :)

OpenStudy (dan815):

x+y=19 11(x)+13(y)=209 solve for x and y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is there a shorter version to do this that' should be a lot of work

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I solve for it and I always get like 19 or some decimal o-o

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It just doesn't seem right!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think i got a decimal also

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But putting the decimal back in for x and such it doesn't add up correctly to 209 v-v I was told that @dan815 was really smart, I was hoping he could help me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@kc_kennylau can you assist me? I really need help with this v-v

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

(1)x11: 11x+11y = 209 ---(3) (2)-(3): 2y=0 --> y=0 ---(4) (4)>(1): x=19 ---(5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = 19?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So there are no non members? o_O

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OMG SO I WAS RIGHT THE WHOLE TIME

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It just seemed so weird, why would they have it like that o-o

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

Never doubt yourself :p

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm in an Algebra honors class, I get everything else except these type of problems v-v

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So when something that weird shows up, I'm unsure if it's correct or not

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But thank you so much @kc_kennylau !!! Also, what grade level are you at, just curious :)

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

I'm at a level equivalent to grade 9

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

I will be at a level equivalent to grade 10 in september

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How o_O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Like how old are you?

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok c;

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how are you that smart

OpenStudy (anonymous):

People work really hard to get to that level of intellect!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good job man

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Only confusing thing know is me wondering why he did those: ---3 ---4 ---5 o_O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is that some sort of way to keep your equation organized or something

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

So that I can refer to the equations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah :P So all that stuff like (4) > 1: is a system you developed for when you answer questions on here? Wow...interesting

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

I usually write subst (4) into (1) in exams

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

But I'm too lazy

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

So that's a yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Arent we all lazy in our own special little ways? haha :P

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

I suppose so ;)
