HELP Pls! The equation of a curve is x²y + 2xy² = 5, where x≠0 and y≠0. Find the equation of the tangent which is parallel to the y-axis.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

find the derivative it is parallel to the y axis where it is undefined

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i.e. where the denominator is zero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uhm.. how do we know if its the denominator or numerator that is zero ? @satellite73

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if parallel to x-axis then denominator is zero too ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if it is parallel to the x axis the slope is zero, the numerator is zero if it is parallel to the y axis, the slope is undefined, the denominator is zero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is an oddly worded question since the line will look like \(x=something\)

thank you :)
