Find a rational number and an irrational number that are between 5.2 and 5.5. Include the decimal approximation of the irrational number to the nearest hundredth. Please help!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know the difference between rational and irrational?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For the most part yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what part of the question is giving you trouble?

OpenStudy (mokeira):

A rational number is a number that can be written as a ratio. That means it can be written as a fraction, in which both the numerator (the number on top) and the denominator (the number on the bottom) are whole numbers. An irrational number can be written as a decimal, but not as a fraction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how about \[\sqrt{28}\]=5.29 \[\sqrt{29}=5.38\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait, so i'm trying to find a rational number out of 5.2,5.3,5.4, and 5.5. None of these can be written as a fraction because they aren't whole numbers. But would it be 5 and a half?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you understand by rational numbers? numbers can be expressed as the ratio of 2 integers, right? so you need to find out ratio of two numbers which give you value between 5.2 and 5.5
