What did J.J. Thomson discover about the atom that changed the atomic model previously used?

He discovered the electron and thus showed that atoms were made of smaller particles. He also proposed that the nucleus had to have a positive charge for an atom to be electrically neutral. He had a wonky "plum-pudding" model, where the positive and negative charges were scattered throughout matter.
