Depends what state you're starting it. For instance, if you go from liquid $\rightarrow$ solid, the molecules are taking a more permanent shape, and coming closer w/in proximity, if you're going from gas $\rightarrow$ liqud, then the molecules are also coming closer, more shape.
but if you're going from liquid $\rightarrow$ gas, then the molecules are becoming more dispersed, and as you know the kinetic energy increeases, since the molecules have more space to collide with each other.

There's also solid $\rightarrow$ gas (sublimation), but i was assuming it went thru liquid state before going into gas in the previous examples.
