you can't ever cross an asymptote (you approach one but don't necessarily even reach one),

vertical asymptotes happen when the function approaches positive or negative infinity, and that happens when you divide by 0... and zero must be in the denominator for that to happen

actually, now that i look at it, a seems to make the most sense in this context, because you can keep going after an asymptote...
