A canoe rental shop on Lake Carmine charges $10 for one hour or less, or $25 for the day. Write a function for this situation. It's obivously going to be a peicewise function. My answer was: f(x)= ( 10 if x less than or equal to 1) ( 25 if x = 24) She circled my x = 24 and counted half a point off. What'd I do wrong and whats the answer?
why would you rent a canoe for 3 hours at $30 if you can rent it for a day for $25?
that doesn't have anything to do with the equation I need?
if you say so
that's why i put a ? because im not sure but... she's looking for two equations so idk
I think it's because they get more money out of the people that don't want to hang onto a canoe for an entire day, so they just pay to return it after a few hours.. Good business technique.
I mean thats true but what about my other functoin I need?
When you say 24, do you mean twenty-four hours?
Because I'm guessing that when they say one day, they don't mean the nighttime as well, so x should equal 12.
yeah i mean hours soooo you're saying it should be 12 hours instead of 24? ot should it be 8 because there are usually 8 business hours ya know
f(x) = 10x when x< 3 f(x) = 25 when 3>x<24 I am not sure that would suffice because that would not cover a rental for more than 1 day.
24 hours you may keep the canoe on multiple days on a river trip .
True some float trips last several days, with overnight camping on a gravel bar.
Don't know if Lake Carmine has any gravel bars...
where do you keep getting the 3 from?
Well as zimmah pointed out there is no way a person would pay over 25 when they have rented it for less than a day, Three hours would exceed the daily rate. I am assuming they are going to charge by the hour (not breaking it down to 15 , 30 min. etc. So 3 hours is the breaking point. (it would exceed the daily rate.)
ohhhhhhhh. i got you. thanks. :)
I think the reason your teacher took off a 1/2 point on the 24 your function used an equal sign probably you should of used 3=> x <= 24
Have you discussed that with your teacher, it would of been nice if she had added a reason comment explaining why.
