When things started getting tough, I would re-read my notes or re-copy them as soon as class ended. That way, I could see what I wrote down and if I had any questions, I could ask the professor soon.

If this is you're first time studying Chemistry, one piece of advice I would give you is to become familiar with the periodic table of elements as soon as possible. It really is the chemist's bible, and contains so much information on each element and how it is likely to behave in different situations. You'll probably be told this anyway, but if you're able to use it effectively it can save you a lot of trouble. Also, if you're able to link in any lab work/experiments you do to the theory you're learning, it can help benefit you're understanding in both areas. Because Chemistry relies a good bit on concepts and things which you can't physically see happening (e.g: with atoms or molecules), it can be difficult to visualize something taking place initially. You're most likely going to meet a topic which you'll find hard to get you're head around...but this happens to everyone, so don't worry. The main thing is to revise and persevere until you can get a clear picture of it in you're mind, and look for help and advice if you need to - science is all about curiosity! Anyway, the best of luck in you're studies @thadyoung ! :)
