what is the definition of implied theme

OpenStudy (asevilla5):

An implied theme is a device that writers and authors use in plays, books, and fiction to add depth and layers to the plot and the characters. An implied theme can be relayed indirectly by what happens to the characters, how they react to it, and how it effects them moving forward in the story. The reader is tasked with active listening and concentration on the plot and characters to figure out what this implied theme is that lies beneath the surface of the narrative.
