Hes mimicking jesus, making fun of him. Jesus was forced to carry his cross over the mountains and before jesus started walking to his destined area to die they put a crown of thorns on his head which made him bleed to death. Jesus died for our sins.

I think there's probably a deeper meaning than that. It probably represents some sort of political figure as well, which is why context or a time period would be helpful.
