OpenStudy (anonymous):

All living things break down _________ to make energy.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe the answer would be glucose, but it could also be simple sugars.

OpenStudy (kamille):

food? (because you can get energy for various sources)

OpenStudy (kamille):

not only sugars (but lipids, for example)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But lipids are not directly broken down into energy, they are broken down into their base parts and turned into sugars.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

The all inclusive statement "All living things.." cannot be satisfied unless you use a broader term because there are organisms (e.g. lithoautotrophs) do not derive their energy from organic compounds at all. A broad term - like, "chemical substance" - would work but that pretty much encompasses everything, so it seems like a pointless question.
