Explain why not all energy is available as food energy from one level to the next.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Energy transfer is very inefficient. Out of all the energy that comes from the sun, only so much reaches the earth, and only part of that reaches the surface, and only part of that is able to be used by plants in photosynthesis. Then when an animal eats that plant, only part of the energy is able to be stored, the rest is wasted. From there on, any animal that eats that animal will receive even less energy than the previous step because energy is lost due to inefficiency.
