You want to use high energy radiation for studying solid materials. Lower energy radiation like Infrared and Microwave (and Radio), allow us to see heat (night-vision), use light to speed up molecules (a microwave), and listen to light (a radio!!). Please refer this question to one of the science sections though, you will receive more support and it's actually against the Code of Conduct believe it or not. So your XPS/UPS waves, which I actually do not know what they stand for but I'm guess around the x-ray and ultra-violet, are higher energy and are commonly used by medical technologies for studying hard materials within the body, and for manipulating the surface properties of objects which in turn, when measured, give information as to their own properties.
