Please help how to solve 4 |x+3| > 8???????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hint: Isolate the variable.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But what do I do with the absolute value?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so you know that with the absolute variable you have to split it into two equations. 4 |x+3| >8 or 4 |x-3|>8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Once you split them, it's like getting rid of the bars.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, the second one is 4 (-x-3) > 8

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

best to divide both sides by 4 before you look at the absolute value

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

that gives you |x+3| > 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do I do the same to the other one too giving me -(x-3) > 2

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

its x+3 > 2 and x + 3 < -2

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

solve those 2 inequalities for x and you have it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So x> -1 and x< -5 ?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

yes
