two trains leave at the same time traveling in opposite directions. If one train is going 3 times as fast as the other train and the trains are 240 miles apart after 1.5 hours, then how fast is each train moving. Help please

You have to set up a distance rate and time equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

d=rt

OpenStudy (anonymous):

One second I'll set it up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1409185923345:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would this work 3x-240<1.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no you would have to do 1.5x+1.5(3x)=240

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which would become 6x=240 x=40

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then you plug it into each train so train 1 is moving 40 mph while train 2 is moving 120 mph
