laws were made so that they could not vote such as. proof that their grandparents were Americans citizens, literacy tests, they had to pay a fees and etc.

they were free but laws were made to stop them form voting, they were segregated, they were murdered by groups like the KKK, they were charged of false accusations and put into jail, and while this was happening the government was debating whether or not to help them.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and they could not lift a finger in their own defense or else they would accused of riot.
