How can i solve this easily, using algebra?

Alex's favorite restaurant is a buffet-style Chinese restaurant downtown. Each time he goes, he chooses two appetizers and one entree. If the restaurant has four appetizers and five entrees to choose from, how many times could Alex go to the restaurant without choosing the same combination of dishes?

convert everything into values. For example, 4A and 5E to represent the four appetizers and five entrées.

then it should look like this:

4a+5e=?

Since he can get 2 appetizers and 1 entree each time, your equation would look like this:
4(2) + 5(1)

and that would equal 40. Does that make sense? :)
