how do you know when to use a horizontal asymptote and a vertical asymptote.

y goes to \(\pm \infty\) --> use vertical ( bear in mind y is vertical line in Cartesian, right?)
x goes to ........................--> use horizontal ( x is horizontal line in Cartesian)
