It kept alive the history and knowledge of heroes and legends,and thus preserved,reinforced,and promulgated their culture. It was also an important form of entertainment - live readings and recitals would attract large audiences,and poets and bards could make a good living with these and with private recitals for wealthy or powerful members of their society.
Because they are ways that people who had no technology to explain things. They couldn't test their beliefs. They can also be important since there was no tv, cell phones, or books (if that far back) — it was just a pastime.
