Why do sex-linked traits follow different patterns of inheritance than other traits?

because they're on sex chromosomes and these are sex-specific; males have a different set than females. In cases where there is a recessive gene located on the X chromosomes, males have a greater tendency to express that gene since they only have one X chromosome.
