In short, atomospheric nitrogen (N2) is converted to NH4 (ammonium) by bacteria in the soil or lichen. This process is called biological nitrogen fixation. Many of the soil bacteria live in little nodes in plants roots, so when the bacteria die, the NH4 becomes available to plants.
