A recipe for potting soil that makes enough to fill 5 bags calls for lb of compost. Michael wants to modify the recipe so that it fills 14 bags. How many more pounds of compost will Michael need for the modified recipe than the original recipe calls for?

Find how many times you need to multiply the 5 bags to get it to 14 bags. That will get you the number you need to multiply the original number of pounds of compost you need. 5x=14 x=2.8 or 2 4/5 You didn't include the pounds of compost originally needed, but just multiply it by 2.8 and you'll get how much compost you need for the modified recipe.
