Mathematics 8 Online
OpenStudy (anonymous):

Will someone please help me to solve this expression x/8 - 5 = -1?

OpenStudy (lxelle):

First of all +5 on both sides, remaining x/8 on LHS.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um when I add 5 to negative 1 does it go up to -6 or does it just go to 4?

OpenStudy (lxelle):

What's 5 less 1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you mean?

OpenStudy (lxelle):

-1+5 is the same as 5-1

OpenStudy (lxelle):

Okay?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok so were left with x/8= 4? and then do we multiply each side by 4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or divide both sides by 4? I'm confused sorry Idk which one to do

OpenStudy (lxelle):

Nooo. You want to solve x. In order to solve x you need to make only x on LHS.

OpenStudy (lxelle):

So what do you do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we have to multiply both sides by 8?

OpenStudy (lxelle):

Yessssss.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so now we get x= 32 and that is our answer right?

OpenStudy (lxelle):

Absolutely. You've done it well!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you! :)

OpenStudy (lxelle):

It's all your effort. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I learn best when someone helps me understand step by step! :)

OpenStudy (lxelle):

Great.
