Use the expression to answer the question |-4 + x| -12 What is the value of the expression when x=6 A. -2 B. -10 C. 2 D. 10 E. -14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How did you solve it?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

plug in 6 for x so | -4 + 6 | -12 what is -4+6 ? then that minus 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

jigglypuff you forget the absolute value signs, they change the value of 4 from negative to positive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

after that the equation is just 4+6-12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you change -4 to positive then just solve it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait scratch that last bit

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

not quite, pemdas so you should do -4+6 first then turn it positive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've been on summer break too long, jigglypuff is right about how to solve it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So its 10 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not quite, only whats inside the absolute value signs becomes positive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be 4+6-12?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

it would be -4 + 6 = 2 then 2 - 12 = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-10

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

-10 is correct ^_^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you :)

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

glad we could help :)
