Why was Lucy Stone so significant during the Progressive Era? She founded the weekly feminist newspaper The Women's Journal and lectured for the American Anti-Slavery Society. She staged pickets outside the Capitol and was jailed in service of the suffrage cause. She was the first president of the National American Woman's Suffrage Association. She was an African American journalist who wrote about racism and the separate-but-equal doctrine.
