Absolute Value of H-4=9 Which solutions are right? -13 -5 5 13
-5 and 13, because |13-4|->|9|=9 and |-5-4|=|-9|=9
So you have |H-4|=9. Whether inside absolute value should be either 9 or -9, So you have H-4=9 or H-4=-9 Solve for H from both equations, you will get your solution
First, I think you mean |h-4|=9, as "absolute value of H-4=9" would make no sense. Remember that the absolute value operator will convert anything within the absolute value symbols to positive if that "anything" happens to be negative; if that "anything" is already positive, the absolute value operators have no effect.
"First, I think you mean |h-4|=9, as "absolute value of H-4=9" would make no sense." Thank to common sense, this is pretty obvious.
Case 1: h-4 is already positive. Then h-4=9. h=? Case 2: h-4 is negative. Then |h-4| has the value (-)(h-4). Solve for h.
@mathmale I didn't really know how to type the absolute value sign.
Have you found the appropriate character on your keyboard? An alternative way to write "Absolute Value of H-4=9" would be abs(H-4)=9.
This is how it was written and I really didnt understand. Oh alright I get it now
@mathmale
Oh well, then we are all wrong, since we assumed you mean |h-4|=9
It was my fault and I apologize for that.
So for this case, you just add both sides by 4, to cancel out -4 in left side of equation then you would have |h|=9+4
@micahwood50: Instead of criticizing and finding fault, why not contribute something positive, something that would help the person asking the question towards finding his/her own answer?
umm i didn't really blame anyone, what happened recently is simply misunderstand. Nobody's fault really... Since you are apparently expert with helping person, I think it's best if you help him instead of me, sorry.
