State the vertical asymptote of the rational function.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

do we know what causes a vertical asymptote?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got x=9 and x=-7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that correct?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

those would be the roots, or zeros of the function, since neither one of them relate to a VA

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh then i read the question wrong

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if a zero in the bottom does not cause a zero on the top, we get a vertical asymptote

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the VA is the denominator right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = 2, x = –2 that would cause the bottom to be a 0, so thats it right?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

it has the most to do with the denominator, yes if we get a 0/0, its a hole if we get n/0, we get a va

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 and negative 2

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

youre welcome :)
