1/4 x-3 + 2<1

are you trying to get X alone? When starting with the problem, START by combining like terms. Combine (-3) and 2, which will give u.. 1/4 x-1< 1 Then continue by undoing addition/subtraction. In this case u need to add 1 to each side. 1/4 x-1<1 +1 +1 1/4 x < 2 Now you are trying to isolate or get rid of the 1/4 by multiplying with the reciprocal, which is 4 to get X alone. So u multiply each side by 4. 1/4 x < 2 *4 *4 Which gives u... X<8 Also for future reference the inequality sign DOES NOT change UNLESS you are dividing the negative coefficient or multiplying the negative reciprocal. Meaning the next to the variable has to be a negative number ONLY!
